ACADEMIC WRITING

Tasks 1 and 2 will be assessed differently.

Format of Academic Writing

Task Types are selected from a variety of sources including books, journals, magazines, and newspapers.

ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 1

Firstly, Writing Task 1 will be describing facts or figures that are presented in one or more graphs, charts or tables on a related topic. You may also be given a diagram of a machine, a device or a process and asked to explain how it work. You should NOT spend more than 20 minutes on this task. Write at least 150 words and answers that are too short will be penalized. Ensure that your answer is on topic. There will be one (1) question.

Writing Task 1 will focus on the ability to identify the most most important and relevant information and trends in a graph, chart, table or diagram, and provide an overview in a well-organized style.

ACADEMIC WRITING TASK 2

Secondly, Writing Task 2 will be on a topic about an academic or semi-formal/neutral style.. The answers should consider relevant issues. You should spend no more than 40 minutes on this task. Write at least 250 words and answers that are too short will be penalized. Task two is worth twice as much as writing task 1.

Furthermore, Writing Task 2 will focus on the ability to present a clear, relevant, well-organized argument, giving evidence or examples to support ideas and use language accurately. There will be one (1) question.

GENERAL WRITING

 

There are two tasks focused on general interest.

Format of General Writing

GENERAL WRITING TASK 1

Firstly, the Writing Task 1 will be responding to a situation such as through writing a letter to request information or explain a situation. You should NOT spend more than 20 minutes on this task. Write at least 150 words and answers that are too short will be penalized. Ensure that your answer is on topic. There will be one (1) question.

Writing Task 1 will focus on the ability to follow English -writing conventions, using the language accurately, and appropriately as well as organize and link information coherently and cohesively.

GENERAL WRITING TASK 2

Secondly, the Writing Task 2 will be a semi-formal/neutral discursive essay. The task will be to give information about a point of view, argument or problem. The topic will be of general interest. You should spend no more than 40 minutes on this task. Write at least 250 words and answers that are too short will be penalized. Task two is worth twice as much as writing task 1.

In addition, Writing Task 2 will focus on the ability to follow English discursive writing conventions, to organize and link information coherently, and cohesively and use the language accurately and appropriately. There will be one (1) question.
